Sermon Notes: "Church Shopping vs. Servanthood"

Key Scripture: Mark 10:35-45

"Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant..." (v. 43)

1. The Pitfall of Church Shopping

  • Definition: Treating church like a product to consume—seeking personal gain or entertainment.

  • While it's necessary to find a church that fits your beliefs and values, a consumer mindset makes church about "what's in it for me."

  • Church should not be about being served but about opportunities to serve.

2. Jesus' Call to Servanthood

  • Jesus’ teaching: True greatness comes from humility and serving others (v. 43-45).

  • The church's mission is to reflect Jesus’ servanthood: “For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”

  • Consider how you can contribute to the church, not just what the church can do for you.

3. The Beauty of a Serving Church

  • The church is at its most beautiful when it serves others, through:

    • Flood relief efforts

    • Grief support groups

    • Feeding the hungry and caring for the homeless

  • These acts of service reflect the heart of Christ and the purpose of the church.

Reflection & Application

  • How can you serve others in your church or community?

  • Remember, it’s never too late to become a servant like Jesus.

Prayer

“God, make me a servant, humble and meek. Help me to lift up those who are weak, and may I serve others as Christ has served us. Amen.”
